More Space to Experience Your City Outdoors

Big things are coming to your Rotary Complex as the City of Stratford takes the first step toward creating its latest Community Park. Our goal is to create an environment in the park property so that, when we are done, Countryside Park will be a well-used outdoor space addressing the year-round needs and activities of its diverse, surrounding community.

Getting it Right

It’s so important that we get a cross-section of community feedback on the development of the park space. To accomplish this, we are using an open consultative process with Countryside Park priority audiences and pop-up events to collectively conceive a design that everyone supports. The ultimate outcome will be a plan to guide the creation of the future park.

All City projects must contribute to Stratford’s sustainability. In other words the Comprehensive Plan is an integral part of ‘getting it right’ with its guidelines and criteria that will let us weigh the various options that emerge through public consultation and outreach.

Community Input

The design of Countryside Park continues to build momentum as we conclude the public engagement component and move on to the design of a final Comprehensive Plan for the future park. Outreach began in July with Priority Audience interviews and included a Public Workshop in September, culminating in the Public Information Centre (PIC) held on October 2nd at the Rotary Complex. Along the way, community members have shared thoughts and opinions on what is most needed by Countryside Park users. Additional input was also collected online through Engage Stratford after the Public Workshop and after the Public Information Centre.

Initial feedback included a consistent list of interests and preferences which informed the design of two preliminary concepts. Core values guiding the development of each concept included Universal Design, Nature, and a Variety of Seating Options.

We will use a scoring key to evaluate feedback based on recreational value, financial impact, timing constraints, and overall responsiveness to community needs and desires. Following this review, key elements from each of the preliminary concepts will be combined into a hybrid solution.

Refining the Plan

Community feedback during and after the Public Information Centre was generally positive. Constructive suggestions included:

  • Plenty of natural spaces
  • Quiet areas with shade
  • Additional trails
  • Outdoor skating rink
  • Community gardens
  • Minimized parking
  • Iconic play equipment

Next Steps

The City will be developing the Comprehensive Plan based on the feedback we’ve received. This, along with the Design Report, will be made available for viewing this winter.

Project updates will continue to be provided here.
