The 2021 Downtown Traffic Study and the 2023 Transportation Master Plan identified opportunities to improve intersection operations and pedestrian crossing facilities within the downtown core. In total, seven intersection improvements were recommended for implementation.

The Downtown Intersection Improvements (Stage 1) project will implement these recommendations at the following locations:

  • Project Area 1: Downie Street / George Street intersection
  • Project Area 2: Ontario Street / Huron Street / Church Street intersection
  • Project Area 3: Ontario Street / Waterloo Street intersection

At each location, curb extensions are proposed to help calm traffic and reduce pedestrian crossing distances. In addition, a raised pedestrian crossing is proposed at the Downie Street / George Street intersection, while an infiltration trench and supplementary street lighting are proposed at the Ontario Street / Church Street intersection.

Conceptual designs from the 2021 Downtown Traffic Study, along with the final project designs, are available in the Documents section.
